Leading Up To This Event
On Saturday 11 March, 2010, 235 skiers set a new world record at CairnGorm Mountain ski resort in Scotland by skiing or snowboarding down the mountain in single file in kilts. Proceeds of the event went to charities. They were hoping for 600, but 262 signed up and 235 made it officially from start to finish.
It turned out that Guinness World Records did not sanction the event and did not accept the record.
So we thought "Let&lsquos; give it a try." We filed a web-based application on June 16,2010 to determine if we could get an official approval to go for the world record.

On August 4, 2010 we finally got an answer:
“Claim ID: 311958
Membership Number: 274566
Dear Mrs Paula Thomas,
"
Thank you for your enquiry regarding your intention to attempt the record for “Most people wearing kilts on skis/snowboard ”. Your proposal is not of interest to us as a new category. However, we have searched our Record Database and think that the following record may be of interest to you instead: ŐLargest gathering of people wearing kilts.
The current record (current as at the date of this letter) is:
Minimum Requirements:
250 people.
You may wish to check with us again closer to submitting your full claim to be sure that a new record has not been set in the interim.
Please note that any current record information is provided to you to the best of Guinness World Records knowledge and belief as at the date of this letter and is based on the record information currently logged on the Guinness World Records database. This current record may change at any time due to a new record being approved. You are responsible for keeping yourself up to date with any new records as Guinness World Records will not inform you of any change to the current record.”
Clearly we were disappointed with the answer. I took us a while to respond. Their answer showed a sense of not knowing what this was all about. Indeed it sounded like they didn&lsquot know what a kilt was, or what it was used for. So here was our answer that we emailed to them on September 9:
“CLAIM ID: 311958
Membership Number: 274566
We&lsquore very disappointed that you have rejected our request. We believe that it would have attracted quite a gathering and also induce competition at other ski resorts. We&lsquove had a lot of interest expressed in participating in such an event.
The category that you suggested “Largest gathering of people wearing kilts” has really no attraction, because there are already large gatherings of people in kilts because of historic and cultural reasons, and they would have no interest in developing this as a Guinness World Record Event because such gatherings are in the interest of pride, and not setting records. For example, the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo event in August in Edinburgh, Scotland has for a number of nights around 1,000 performers per night, most wearing kilts. and easily surpass your 250 minimum number. But that&lsquos not the point of the gathering, and hence any gathering for a world record attempt is hollow and meaningless.
I ask that you reconsider the proposed event, there was in fact another group setting this world record last year on Cairngorm Mountain in Scotland all be it they must not have recorded it with your organization. That, in my opinion, shows that there is at least some interest in this event around the world. I have attached the article about the folks on CairnGorm that claims to have set the world record last year published by BBC. Again, please reconsider, we do have many people that are interested in participating and the ski resort is very excited to participate.
Thank you for your consideration.”
We have not yet heard back from them!
